Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program Services

The Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP) has helped thousands of refugees begin new lives in Vermont since 1980. Currently our four largest groups are Bhutanese, Burmese, Iraqi and Somali refugees.

VRRP provides refugees with their first home in the U.S. and helps them get their first job. The resettlement program plays two roles. We offer short-term intensive services with the goal of helping refugees achieve self-sufficiency within eight months. We also provide English Language Training and employment services for five years after arrival.

Reception & Placement (R&P) Case Managers provide newcomers with direct transitional services as well as with coordination of services and appointments. Assistance with housing, school enrollment, medical visits, and social security registration are some of the many tasks taken on by case managers. Case managers provide assistance in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

English Language Training
English language lessons are required of each adult. VRRP offers free English classes for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), taught by community volunteers. Refugees who arrive with higher level English skills are referred to other educational centers in the community. When an adult member of a family cannot attend English classes due to work or child care related scheduling conflicts, we attempt to find an in-home tutor to work with that individual.

Volunteer to become an ESOL instructor or tutor.
