Services for Refugees

USCRI Detroit acts to meet the immediate basic needs of refugees when they first arrive in the United States. We provide refugees with the support services and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives and enrich their communities.  USCRI Detroit assists them in obtaining early employment and achieving self-sufficiency as well as facilitate their integration into the community. Our professional staff often works with local volunteers to help refugee families build new lives in the Detroit area.

Case Management
Reception & Placement (R&P) Case Managers provide newcomers with direct transitional services as well as with coordination of services and appointments. Assistance with housing, school enrollment, medical visits, applying for public assistance, and social security registration are some of the many tasks taken on by case managers. After a refugee’s first few months in the United States, case managers begin to refer clients to other service providers for additional assistance. Case managers provide assistance in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

Employment Assistance
Many of our clients receive additional case management services focused on employment and self-sufficiency through our Match Grant program. Match Grant Case Managers and Job Developers work with refugees to help them obtain gainful employment in their communities. USCRI Detroit Staff use participatory learning principles and address issues of interest to participants.  We conduct pre and post training assessments to determine our refugee's level and progress.  Employment services also include an introductory instruction about the American workplace, job searching, and assistance with completing job applications and interviews. USCRI Dearborn strives to empower adults to begin employment as soon as possible after arrival, whether or not they speak English.

Preferred Communities Program
The Director of USCRI Detroit and the Preferred Communities (PC) Coordinator engage with local officials, community organizers, religious leaders and other social service providers to activate local community support and develop a positive reception for new refugees. The Coordinator plans activities for refugees that promote learning, integration and a better understanding of new customs and ideas. The PC Coordinator is also responsible for facilitating donations from the local community to help newly arrived refugees furnish their first apartment in the U.S.
