As a teenager, an eighteen year-old Chinese girl saw her family falling into increasing debt from her father’s gambling. The family was forced to mortgage the house. Gangs threatened to force her into prostitution to pay back the money. In order to help her family, she decided to disseminate Falun Gong literature to bring in a small income. Although initially the girl did not practice Falun Gong, out of curiosity she began to participate in the religious activities. She became afraid, however, when the government arrested a friend who also practiced Falun Gong. Fearing that the authorities would also identify her, she went into hiding. Her family later helped her gain passage to the United States. After she arrived, the U.S. immigration authorities placed her in a detention facility. Eventually they released her to a sponsor.
