ANGELINA JOLIE DONATES AN ADDITIONAL $150,000 TO CHILDREN'S CENTER

'Over the years, Actress and Humanitarian Angelina Jolie donated a half of million dollars to The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants'

Washington D.C. (12/31/07) Today, Actress and United National High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina Jolie, once again contributed $150,000 to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) to support the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children (The Center).  The mission of the Center is to provide pro bono legal and social services for unaccompanied immigrant children as they navigate the U.S. Immigration Courts.

"Ms. Jolie has been a supporter and advocate for the Children's Center here at USCRI for many years," said Lavinia Limón President and CEO of USCRI.   "This money will be used to protect the most vulnerable of populations.  Each year, over 7,000 unaccompanied immigrant children arrive in the United States.  Many of the children that we see are coming from areas where they have been subjected to trafficking, persecution or domestic violence.  I applaud Ms. Jolie's efforts to alleviate the dire plight of these children.  I wish we had more humanitarians like her."

The Children's Center at USCRI has been in existence since 2005.  Most of the children come to the U.S. without resources and are referred by social service professionals, detention authorities, attorneys, family members and concerned individuals in cities all over the country.  The majority of these children come from Central America, but others come from China, Iraq, Poland and Nigeria.

Since 1911, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) has sought to address the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life.

"We commend Ms. Jolie for her ongoing efforts to help child refugees,” remarked Ms. Limón. To donate directly to USCRI in support of The Center, please visit our website at http://www.refugees.org/
